After spending most of the year at sea, some 43,000 pairs return to the UK’s Farne Islands each spring to raise their young. Despite their small size, puffins are hardy but have, in recent years, faced the combined challenges of bird flu and pollution and overfishing impacting their main food source – sand eels. Puffins can hold an astonishing number of these little fish in their serrated bill – one was recorded holding 83 at once!
